Ramayana is not just an ordinary story.  It contains the teachings of the very ancient Hindu sages.

Mahabharata is more than simply a story of kings and princes, sages and wise men, demons and gods.  One of its aims is elucidating the four goals of life, i.e., righteousness, wealth, pleasure, and liberation.  Hindus believe liberation to be the ultimate goal of human beings.
